Edith: Beyond the Unknown

“There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception.” Aldous Huxley

There is more going on in life, then our perception can perceive, or what we can comprehend with our rational minds. We may call these unexplainable, the unknown, undiscovered, the mystery, or we can just believe that something like that cannot happen. But when we open are minds, think of new possibilities, knowing that there could be more than we can perceive. Instead of dismissing it, maybe we could start by questioning or asking “Is there more than are five senses? Is there more going on around me that I’m not aware of?” Let’s stay open to the possibility of seeing things anew, seeing in a different way of being, though a new awareness, seeing the possibility that there may be more than we thought. I’m sharing this story, of my first time seeing a phenomenon in my first year in hospice.

I pulled up to where Edith lived with her daughter Mary. I had been helping Edith for a couple of months now. I knew that Edith was unresponsive now and would be leaving this world soon. Mary greeting me at the door, she told me that her mother was sleeping in her bed in the backroom. Mary told me that she had errands to run and would like me to sit with her mother while she was gone. Mary wanted to make sure that her mother wasn’t alone.

I walked back to her room, as I opened the I noticed how dark the room was, all the curtains were closed. I saw that there was a little tiny dresser with a lamp on it, it was the only light in the room. I found the folding chair right next to Edith bed side; the wall of this room was right behind me. It was a tight squeeze. Edith looked so serene, just so peaceful. Her hands were laying above the covers next to each other. I touch her arm and let her know I was there. I sat there quietly in her room, as she laid quietly sleeping.

As I sat there I happened to see something out of the corner of my eye. I looked at the end of Edith’s bed, then I looked up to the ceiling and there right at the top of the ceiling was this gray cloud, twirling clockwise. I just said to myself “WHAT?!” It was the size of a basketball, just slowly turning. To get a full perspective of my state of mind at the time. I was afraid of anything I could not explain. I believed in phoneumon, but as long as I don’t see it right in front of me, that was just fine with me. I truly should have been running and screaming out of the room. But I wasn’t, I felt like running but at the same time, I felt this calmness inside of me. I just stared at it. I looked down at Edith and she was just laying there peacefully. I looked back up and it was slowing moving down toward Edith.

I am thinking there got to be a reason for this, there is something in this room that is making this happen. I got up and ducked right under the gray cloud. I headed right to the curtains and started moving them. I wanted to see if the light filtering in the room was creating this. I opened and shut them, it was still up there twirling around and slowly moving downward. I checked the lights on the oxygen tank. Turned on and off the lights in the room. Checking all the lights on any machines in the room, it was still there, nothing in the room was causing this to happen. I ducted back under the twirling cloud and sat back down next to Edith.

Edith was so serene, no body movements were coming from her, just her light breathing. I sat there and watched this twirling cloud as it moved slowly toward Edith’s face. At one moment it was right in front of me. I wasn’t even afraid, it felt like I was surrounded in peace, a calmness that I should not have had under these circumstances. I just continued to watch it, seeing what it was going to do. It slowly descended right in front of Edith’s face, just twirling slowly, I was just transfixed on it. I could still see Edith’s face and body, how she was in complete peace, as this cloud twirled right in front of her face.

All of a sudden I just jumped out of my skin, Edith with her eyes closed lifted up her hand to this twirling cloud and yelled “I said not now! I said not now!” I jumped because she yelled out of nowhere, I was so shocked. Here was this serine woman sleeping so peacefully and she just yelling at this cloud. Talk about a shock!!? I then just watched this twirling cloud move upward at a much faster pace. It just moved up and up toward the ceiling and then it was gone. I looked back down at Edith, she was so peaceful as though nothing happened, her hands were right where they were before, she was just sleeping like a baby. Edith decided to transition later that night in her own time.

There are many unknown, or unseen by us going on arounds us, some of these things, we are aware of, while other things may allude our awareness. Why do somethings allude are awareness? Is it our perception, what we believe? I believe it is. I have learned that when we open up to our own beliefs and recognize that they may not be true and we let go of these old beliefs, old ideas, we open to a new perception of life, a new awareness of possibilities.

Let’s explore this, take a moment and contemplate “what was happening in Edith room that day? What was this twirling cloud?” Go ahead ask the questions to the Higher Consciousness, contemplate, you don’t need to be in meditation, you don’t need to close your eyes, just breath and ask? Try this question too “Is there more to life then I am aware of right now?” Ask questions, there may be times the answers come right away, other times it comes later on, just out of the blue. It will come in all different ways. Stay open! Be willing to see life differently!
